10 Classic Freshman Moves
Sunday, May 04, 2014 | 0 Comment |
Whilst most of my peers of the same age are preparing for their graduation.. Getting their gowns fitted and submitting their last academic reports and posting lots of 'best lecturer ever' pics on instagram.. I am also celebrating my last day as a inexperienced university student!
Here's a list of retarded things only a freshman would do ( I might or might not have experienced these myself):
1. Skip Orientation
Oh yes, miss it and for the rest of the year you'll be eating by yourself and losing food to scavenging birds. (Hahaha. Refer to earlier post.)

2. Miss a Deadline
I'm not sure if other people do this in their later years too. But if you continue to sacrifice your grades like this, kiss goodbye to your First Class Honours. In order to perfect my assignment, I did not submit it even though I did it 2 days after the assignment was posted. I confused myself and thought I did submit it and in the end.. lost 7% just like that. I begged for a second chance but,

3. Choose a Lousy 1 Bid Point Mod
Yea. Didn't wanna get into the bidding action? Lazy to do your research? One whole year of unbearable lectures and burdensome work for you!!

Ok this point doesn't really apply to me cos I love the mods that I chose to take and they happen to be 1 bid point. Mcq exams too and no tuts! *score*
Update: After doing my Genes and Soc paper.. I feel very mixed about it because the multiple choice questions were tough as hell. True or false, not true or not false in a billion combinations. *sigh* Should've been open book if everything was application.
4. Skipping Lectures for Assignments
I won't do this anymore! I promise!! I'll improve my time management skills!

5. Being Last Minute on Projects
I guess this is inescapable since group work always has some kind of inertia.

6. Not Understanding What Your Prof Wants
Took me a while to get this cos some Profs really have differing expectations. I have 2 Profs from the same department and are polar opposites of each other and I suffered the consequences.

Note to self: ALWAYS ASK IF IN DOUBT.
7. Poor Exam Time Table Planning
7. Poor Exam Time Table Planning
I had 3 consecutive days of 9am papers which have caused me sleepless nights, dark eye circles and large eye bags. I looked terrible the past week, with pimples poping up in the most prominent places of your face like between the eyebrows. Hate those!!
I really have a problem falling asleep when my papers are in the morning for some reason. If they're in the afternoon I'd be fine. So weird. I think I have a strange fear of missing my paper. Haha.
In my previous semester I had 2 papers on the same day. I didn't really have a choice for this as they were my core subjects but I could've lessened my burden this semester if I hadn't taken genetics. *sigh once more*
8. Underload/Overload
I took 4 modules last semester because I couldn't get my choice module. Much later, I realized I should've cleared a module if I could. Life will only get harder as we progress up the years.
I still have 3 more years of student life to endure, which really isn't a bad thing cos I've yet to go on an exchange! Or enjoy a really good class and make more friends.
I also know some people who bitten off more than they can chew. 9 modules in a single semester. OH MY. That is just a crazy amount of work. I personally feel that if you spend the last league of your education buried in books and words and more books and assignments.. You're really losing out on the fun but then again, it is your choice. 9 is just one too many to study in 18 weeks though.
9. Underdressing for a Presentation
Rookie mistake. Always dress presentably! Regardless whether it's a 3 mark or 30 mark grading. Don't be lazy!!
10. Taking a Module Alone
I haven't underwent any modules by myself but I have heard horror stories of grouping with the worst people in a module.Try to synchronize your timetable with someone reliable! Even if its just the 2 of you working in the group, way better than being alone.
Good luck to those of my friends who've yet to end their academic year and to those who are graduating! Hope you'll secure a job soon and bring me out to dine with your $3k and up salary. ^^
I must say I feel a little sour not being able to graduate as early as I should have. But I am also glad that I don't have to join the work force yet. Although I very much wish to be employed this holiday. I have lots of things lined up including photo shoots, a family vacation, outings, dance classes and much moree!
For today, I'll enjoy my new found freedom at my grandma's :)

P.S I'm here right now and she's ill. Hope She recovers soon.
